When put to the test by situations of interaction and dispute, the “public” category takes on a set of meanings in accordance with the situations presented and according to the multiple senses and declinations that it acquires and are attributed to it in the architectures of common life. The proposal, therefore, is to shed light upon the ways in which actors and institutions appropriate these spaces informed by different logics, whether they be “individualistic” and “egalitarian” or “holistic” and “hierarchical”, by dynamically

combining such principles in the management of everyday conflicts. This means that the references to the Republic and the Democratic State of Law, although they are fundamental aspects to the discussion presented here, are not the starting point of the research, but accompany it at all levels, being present in the reflections derived from our ethnographies. After this effort of relativization, it is then possible to contrast and confront the explicit forms of administration and resolution of conflicts and disputes in relation to republican and democratic values; values cherished by the Western tradition of the nation-state. That is, our interest is to seek to shed light upon the logic and foundations inherent in the forms of conflict management. Thereby, the comparison, through the internationalization of the researchers (and not only of their research subject), allows the analysis of the social phenomena with which we confront each other, explaining by contrast the characteristics that are otherwise hidden and implicit in our society and culture.

In this sense, it is necessary to contextualize categories such as “public”, “law”, “justice”, “judicial and police system”, “public security”, “rights”, “privileges” and “inequalities”, among others; and to problematize the representation and role they play in modern Western states. In this sense, being among those that we choose as our interlocutors/initiators produces in the researcher an abrupt displacement between theories and their repercussions in the conditions of well formulated and apprehended adjustments in the cognitive and methodological domain. In its socialization process, displacement comprises a fundamental stage in professional training and in the controlled construction of comparisons.

The nature of anthropological knowledge is comparative and contrastive in the exercise of relativization and estrangement required by the understanding of the different facets of life in common. Unlike the hard sciences, whose methods and theories can acquire generality and universality by virtue of their characteristics – as they are protocoled knowledge, regulated by the relative predictability granted by the laboratory -, social conditions can result in significant adjustments of the conditions of theories for a better understanding of the complexity of social phenomena. Acquiring familiarity with another culture or

value system, the social scientist plays the role of translating them, making them intelligible to the very system of meanings to which he is referred. It should be noted that this translation takes place in an interaction between observed and observer, as this is a mandatory part of the field of observation: the framework it provides about the other is something seen and interpreted by someone at a particular moment and in specific circumstances. In this perspective, it is up to the social scientist, so that he can understand another system, to construct data that are comparable “here” and “there”, allowing the to make explicit of the categories foreign to him to allow a better understanding of his own culture, establishing the similarities and differences between two or more value systems.

Prolonged experience in another society, provided by the internship abroad, provides the professional of the social sciences with skills and experiences that are crucial for their academic training, for the possibility of being continuously inserted in another system of thought, requiring cognitive reorientation from strangeness. On the other hand, the relation established in loco with social scientists of other countries allows one to apprehend the different versions of anthropology and sociology developed in contexts related to the values of nation-building. After all, we start from the assumption that, despite its universalist character, as the proposal of anthropology and sociology is theoretical, anthropological and sociological work reflects the heterogeneity of different socio-cultural configurations. Hence the importance of producing symmetrical cooperation devices that allow the creation of a theoretical framework of international scope, providing that theories formulated in different social (and sociological) conditions can be put to the test in face of the multiple social, symbolic and political configurations with which the Network intends to interact during this 4 years.
